Below is a report I generated for the Lansing Board of Water and Light from publicly available financial data. It contains some of the KPI’s and Financial Ratios I decided might be relevant and worth discussing - as well as some brief analysis. One of the benefits of studying Economics in the context of environment science is that it provided me not only a strong foundation in the scientific application of data, but also its practical use in business through the study of utilities and agribusiness.
All the information contained was gained from finding historical financial reports of the company, and building out missing relevant metrics such as Cost of Goods Sold from line items. The BWL, being a public utility presents most of this in a Statement of Position rather than the three core financial statements, which was a challenge, but ultimately a fun puzzle to work out.
Cash Flow Analysis was conducted using Excel’s built in function with a polynomial function (for increased accuracy) from the previous five years of reported data.
